Student DO of the Year

The COSGP Student Services Committee coordinates selection of the Student DO of the Year (SDOY) at each osteopathic institution, including a national winner. The national winner receives a $1,000 scholarship and commemorative plaque from AACOM. The 2008 National Student DO of the Year was Katie Perz, OMS III, MSUCOM. The OMS Spotlight in The DO for May 2009 featured student doctor Perz, along with all SDOY winners from each institution.

The 2009 SDOY winners from each school or college of osteopathic medicine and the national winner will be announced in April, 2010. These students shall be recognized at both the AACOM Annual Meeting in April and the AOA House of Delegates in July of the same year.

Student Seminar

Each year in conjunction with the AOA Convention, COSGP sponsors a Student Seminar. Senator Joe Heck, DO (from the Nevada State Senate) spoke about "Leadership and Political Activity as a Physician" at the AOA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Additionally, Jay Kirkham, OMS II from AZCOM, and a former lobbyist on Capitol Hill, spoke about the current Presidential Election and each candidate's views on healthcare.

National Osteopathic Student Caucus

In conjunction with the AOA's House of Delegates in Chicago, the National Osteopathic Student Caucus (NOSC) is held and serves as a forum to unify the voice of Osteopathic medical students about matters concerning the osteopathic profession and education. All Osteopathic students are invited and encouraged to attend each year!

TOUCH

Since 2004, the Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health (TOUCH) program has encouraged and recognized osteopathic medical students who participate in community service. All students who participate in at least 50 hours over the course of a school year receive an official TOUCH pin.

Annual Day of Compassion

On October 19, 2004, thirteen renowned osteopathic physicians aboard Flight 5966 tragically lost their lives. In their memory, October 19 has become the Annual Day of Compassion. Events are held on many campuses and communities, to honor all those who exemplify compassion and humanism and those who inspire others to do the same.
